Diabetes is a chronic condition defined by an abnormally high level of sugar(glucose) in the blood. In Ghana for instance, diabetes is referred to as the sugar disease. On this account, by regulating diabetes, one is  inclined to resort to only cutting down the intake of sugar. But well, is it all about limiting sugar intake?  

When we eat, all forms of carbohydrates are converted to glucose. It is then transported into body cells to be used as fuel. This is made possible by a hormone known as insulin. Type 1 diabetes presents with an insulin deficiency whiles Type 2 diabetes presents with insulin resistance by the body.  Hence, this broadens regulating diabetes beyond just limiting sugar intake. It also involves ways to actively keep insulin functional in the body.

Diabetes is strongly influenced by lifestyle conditions and hence can be regulated by changes in lifestyle.

  • EXERCISE REGULARLY

Physical exercise provides substantial health benefits for diabetic patients.  Also, physical activity is shown to enhance insulin sensitivity as well as reduce the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

  •  GET PLENTY OF SLEEP

Not getting enough sleep increase the odds for diabetes. Many studies have shown that sleep deprivation directly affects glucose metabolism. Also, lack of sleep alters hormonal processes in the body. This can result in insulin resistance, a risk factor for diabetes.

  •  REDUCE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Research suggests that light to moderate alcohol drinkers are at a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But, It is also  important to note that  excessive alcohol consumption is known to cause a severe fall in plasma glucose level in type 1 diabetes leading to Hypoglycaemia (decrease serum glucose for energy)

  • LIMIT THE INTAKE OF CAFFEINATED BEVERAGES

Several studies propose that caffeine protects against type 2 diabetes. However, pre-diabetic patients and diabetic patients are at high chance of aggravating diet complications when they consume caffeine beverages.

  • EAT LESSER AMOUNTS OF CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates are very essential as it provides the body with energy. Despite that, consuming too much worsens diabetes. Low carb diets have a good effect on blood glucose. It  is considered an effective technique for regulating diabetes from home.

  • EAT SMALLER-SIZED PORTIONS OF FOOD

Overeating has a positive association with weight gain and obesity which induces insulin resistance. This suggest that eating smaller portions of food decreases the odds for diabeteS

  • MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Unhealthy weight gain ( overweight/obesity) is a substantial risk factor for diabetes amongst other diseases. For this reason, maintaining a healthy weight will at the same time help regulate your diabetes.

  • MAKE GOOD DIETARY CHOICES

Regulating blood sugar levels is highly dependent upon the food choices we make. It is recommended that diabetics consume more foods rich in fibre. Anyone with diabetes should first consult their physician or dietician before making any changes in their diets.
